Thorngate Churcher Trust has announced plans to create up to 28 new homes in the borough for those who are over 50 and of limited means.

The charity has been providing homes for those in need in Gosport since 1865. It currently operates 124 sheltered flats for assisted living across three sites in Gosport and is an almshouse which is a charitable form of self-sufficient, low-cost community housing for local people in housing need.

Now the charity says it is looking to build more new homes to meet rising demand in Gosport and is set to apply for planning permission for new homes on what is currently an unused site in the town.

“We know there is tremendous demand from those over 50 years old who are looking for a social landlord who can help them live independently but with the benefit of warden support,” said Thorngate chief executive Anne Taylor.

“Thorngate is committed to increasing the number of homes it can offer and we look forward to being able to meet some of the rising demand from local people for modern, supported housing with communal facilities, set in landscaped grounds.”

Thorngate is hoping to apply for permission for the new development this spring and says it will be holding a public consultation for local residents to learn more about the plans and comment on the modern new homes proposed.

“We have been part of the Gosport community since the first almshouses were built by the charity’s founders back in 1865 and we are looking forward to sharing details of the plans and how we will continue to offer independent assisted living to as many people as possible in Gosport,” added Anne.

The new development is planned for a site on the corner of Grove Road and Sealark Road in Gosport.
